This is the fourth year running that Alix Partners and HealthInvestor have worked together to bring you the annual Growth Company Report and once again 2016’s list provides a fascinating snapshot of the health and social care sector.

In what has been a tumultuous year in almost every possible way, the method of measuring growth through ranking the 25 health companies with the greatest compound annual growth rate (by editba) over the past three years provides some much-needed perspective on the market.

What’s clear from this year’s 25, then, is that there is indeed considerable growth taking place in the health and social care sector. Perhaps unsurprisingly, many of the top 25 primarily earn their revenue from providing staffing services, an area of the market that has rocketed in recent years as the chronic shortage of nursing and care staff has led to a spike in agency costs for most operators. Consequentially, the increased costs of paying for these staff has hit the bottom line of care home businesses, and only an elite few make this year’s list – with most focusing almost entirely on the private pay market.

Elsewhere, specialist care continues to perform strongly and those businesses delivering complex, high-risk services continue to receive solid funding from commissioners. Moreover, dentistry features yet again and one of the more notable names on the list is Oasis Healthcare. After delivering a three-year ebitda growth rate of 27.5% the business was recently acquired by Bupa for £835 million from private equity firm Bridgepoint. Bridgepoint acquired Oasis from Duke Street in 2013 for £185 million and proceeded to buy a further 191 dental practices.

The deal represents a terrific exit for Bridgepoint and shows the potential benefits of pursuing an aggressive growth strategy in the still relatively unconsolidated UK health and social care market. This injection of capital from a major player will also remind the other 24 companies on the list of how continued growth can be rewarded in a burgeoning market.

Congratulations once again to all of the companies that have made the top 25 in 2016.
