Potential of clinical care in the home to alleviate hospital pressures

There’s no place like home shows that the NHS in England could save £120 million – a fifth of the predicted deficit of all NHS providers’ in 2016-2017 – if every acute trust implemented clinical care in the home.

Wide-scale adoption of clinical care in the home could also save 500,000 overnight patient stays – enabling acute trusts to carry out more elective surgery, manage more emergency admissions and save money.

Produced by an expert panel, the claims are supported by the analysis of the records of more than 9,000 patients who were cared for on a virtual ward between October 2012 and May 2016, comparing them to more than 4.2 million patients who had received all their care in NHS hospitals.
